Instant Gratification

What you want and what you need aren't always ...

What you want and what you need aren’t always the same. Be willing to delay short-term gratification for long-term greatness. -Mandy Hale (Photo credit: deeplifequotes)

If you could get all the nutrition you needed in a day with a pill — no worrying about what to eat, no food preparation — would you do it?

For me it comes down to my old nemesis instant gratification. I mean the pill that would give me everything I needed, nutritionally speaking, appeals greatly to my lazy gene. Its not that I dislike cooking, and readers of my previous post will, by now, be, all too, aware of my bread-making fetish, but who among us has not had days from time to time, when you get home after a strenuous day of ————- (fill in the blank) and the task of preparing a nutritious and tasty repast can seem daunting. I mean, that stir fry don’t stir fry it’s self Mister!

As much as I like the idea and practical convenience of a “magic Pill” though, I don’t think I would choose it over the real thing. There is something about the idea of never having a sumptuous steak or delicious wedge of cheesecake touch these lips and tantalize the taste-buds ever again that sways me against it.

Besides that, think of all the countless appliance and grocery manufacturers and stores we would be putting out of business, not to mention all the farmers, mill workers, chefs and bakers who would be out of a job. I guess some would become pill makers, but still, that’s a whole heap of unemployment to be dealing with especially in these economic times.

Who knows, with the advances in technology and human ingenuity it may someday be possible to replicate the taste touch and feel of favorite foods, in a jagged little Pill. Then, Foodies, such as I, will be able to have our proverbial “cake” and eat it too. Until then though, I think I’ll stick to pigging out in the good old fashioned way.

How about You?

  1. Nah, I think I will always enjoy the real deal anyday. Like you say, it will completely trash the enconmy, not only that but I think food brings people closer, it’s a social thing. Whenever the whole family is altogether we celebrate with food. Also, I can’t imagine having a ‘romantic pill for two’ evening. Eurgh. If I was feeling lazy (which I do on many occasions haha!) then I stick in a microwave meal. 3-4mins, who can complain about that?

    • Hi,
Thanks for your excellent reply, Jenny. You are so
right! I completely skipped the romance/family aspects
of food. I think I can be excused for that, to a point.
I have been single and unattached for eons now, and
      those huge family gatherings
      always leave me traumatized (lol!)
Microwave entrees are a good solution btw.

That’ll teach me to never write on an empty stomach! 🙂
