From the mind of a mild mannered maniac

LOVE HAS DIED TONIGHT

Empty-pill-bottle-300x199

He, walked out on his wife that night,
he didn’t need another fight
Did it, really, matter who was right?
Why had things gone so wrong?

She sat defeated on the floor,
she’d thought their love, worth fighting for.
What good was living anymore?
She cried the whole night long

Gradually his anger died,
replaced with emptiness inside.
He tossed away his foolish pride,
and raced home to make things right.

He gazed into her lifeless stare,
the empty pill pot lying there.
A crumpled note, upon the chair,
said “Love has died tonight”

  1. Cliff….that was beautifully written, though very depressing.

    • Thanks, Colleen, sorry if I depressed you though!. This was based on a true story. Back in the late 90’s, the wife of a local politician here, took her own life when her husband filed for divorce. Seems she would rather die’ than live without him!.I Just came across an old recording of that news story, and this nasty poem popped out of my head.

      • Oh Cliff, I don’t think it’s ‘nasty’ at all. It is beautiful in it’s sadness. I know I am NOT saying what I want to say. Don’t apologize. I think being able to capture all that you did with the few lines you used was amazing.

      • Thank you so much for that, Colleen!. I just didn’t want to upset anyones delicate sensibilities.

I know this happened a long time ago, but it’s about real people and real events, that are only slightly fictionalized. It makes me feel a bit ghoulish for writing about it, and yet I couldn’t resist. What does that say about me?

  2. so sad but so real

    • Thanks it is based on a true story.I was looking through some old vhf tapes, and on one of them, there was a news account’ from around 1997 i think it was.. It was about the wife of a local politician, who took her own life after her husband filed for divorce I was struck by how very tragic that story was.

      • It always amazes me at how some of us consider taking our lives over a divorce or break up. I know, I didn’t consider taking my life but I didn’t eat for three days. my family was so mad at me for being so upset about a rotten guy. They were right and I knew they were, but when we are first alone we think crazy things, and then sadly some act upon those thoughts. hugs my friend

      • I agree, Terry, I would guess she must really have been suffering from some sort of pre-existing depression or mental illness to resort to suicide. It seems to me if she’d had a close family or support group in her life it could have been prevented.

    • I know, l find myself trying to imagine what her emotional state must have been like to drive her to such a drastic action! In my poem, the husband hurries back in an attempt to put things right. In reality, I believe the husband was already involved with another woman.
